First of all,
let's make it clear that from a business point of view both a prostitute and an
escort have the same reference; they are both sex workers. A prostitute
intentionally and professionally abuses herself and her female peculiarities in
order to sell sex. Without any particular effort by the male part (e.g.
courtship), he has an immediate access to biological sexual satisfaction.
Although the
implication of the two professions is very similar, yet the question arises as
to what makes the two subtle meanings behind the word prostitute and escort so
different that their use sometimes requires the strict distinction between the
two terms. In this case, the context and message orientation are strongly
directive. The context requires a delicate and diplomatic way of expression on
the one side, while on the other side, it is the communication style that does
not make much difference when selling sex. It is the orientation that depends
on the user of the word. The human self-expression style may also vary based on
the momentary emotional and nervous state of mind, which contributes to
choosing a style from the verbal toolbars. From this point of view, the
assumption that there is a difference between the term of escort and prostitute
not just morality, but also on the level of practicality has gained sense.
From a practical
point of view the word prostitute means a sex-worker standing along streets to
solicit for sex-buyers. As a term, the word ‘prostitute’ may occur in many
contexts. Let us take a simple practical example, which is the typical conflict
between two women for the same man, his seduction, getting caught in the act,
etc. In this heated situation, the cheated woman’s the aim of insult is to
degrade the seducer in the form of telling names such as a prostitute. If
someone is vehemently called a prostitute then the word of ‘prostitute’ is
intended to suggest that the person in the question is a manipulative bastard
using sex to achieve her specific and hidden objectives. Furthermore, she is
morally so unintelligent that she does not care about the circumstances and
consequences of things, so she has sex around irrespective of the monogamous
relationship norms, paying no attention to social morality.
Although an
escort also implements sexual relationship outside the norms, in a more
positive interpretation the profession is not just about satisfying the desire
of instinctive, raw sex. As an escort, those quality prostitutes are referred
to who can offer a somewhat more personal sexual intercourse and experience
either at their home or at a place suitable to the needs of sex clients
(apartment, hotel, etc.). Moreover, it is more preferable to use the word
‘escort’ in terms of laws and rules regulating sexual services, since although
there are countries (e.g. Sweden) where the provision of sexual service itself
is not illegal, the use of sexual services is still against the law. But as I
mentioned above, an escort prostitute can offer a more private and
self-tailored service, and it is not marginal to mention that she does not sell
sexual services but her time. Using escort time can cover a lot of things, not
necessarily sexuality, which again creates a subtler definition of the concept
of the term ‘escort’. As a consequence, escort service itself is a form of
prostitution that can better hide itself from the laws, and can operate on the
boundary of legality and illegality.
Those
prostitutes’ job who are called escort qualitatively receives an additional
interpretation that sets a professional prostitute in a more positive light
that raises the sex worker to escort level. She sells her time for money, but
besides sex, if clients want her to do so, she converses, cares for the client,
acts as an intellectual partner, and so on. Not to mention that the palette of
sexual services is much more colourful. She does such extra services that aim
at the higher pleasure of the client, not only biologically, but also
intellectually and emotionally. These extra services make a prostitute become
an escort. Remember that she still abuses her female makings in order to create
financial gains, so she is still a prostitute in the strict interpretation of
the trade.
So the
difference between prostitute and escort-prostitute can be perceived. The basic
pillar of their profession is the same, but the escort-prostitute is a more
subtle and sophisticated alternative of a common prostitute. In the carrier
ladder of sex-workers an escort stands one grade higher than a prostitute. It
may be said that not every prostitute is escort, but every escort is basically
prostitute. In view of the fact that the members of the prostitute society
generally likes to be called an escort, and because we would also prefer to use
a taboo-free but diplomatic way of expression, hence we will call every
prostitute as an escort, unless it is necessary to make distinction between the
two terms to give a clear interpretation.
